Each year, the JVs celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day by dedicating the day to a day of volunteering. The Hood River JVs started this MLK Day by cleaning and organizing the St. Francis House. All of the girls were a huge help to the after school program, and the St. Francis House never looked better! Thanks so much to all of the JVs (Haley, Makenna, Sidney, Mary, Louisa, and Tanya)!!
Each day of the St. Francis House is full of fun and pure joy. I captured some of these moments to share with you all some of the fun we like to have!
The week before winter break, the St. Francis House held a Christmas Party! The party was lots of fun and we had a great turn out. We started the party by making paper lanterns while one of our volunteers told us more about Posada traditions. Then, we went on to play a huge game of bingo run by Patrick, pin the nose on Rudolph, and we had a candy cane hunt. After the games, we enjoyed a delicious meal made by one of the student’s parents and candy for dessert. The party was finished with balloon relay races! Thank you so much to everyone who helped make this party a success!
This December, the St. Francis House took a group of students Christmas Caroling around Hood River. We went to three different assisted living centers and spread Christmas joy everywhere we went. The students really enjoyed singing for the residents and it looked like the residents really loved the performance as well! After caroling, Patrick took all of the kids to Sharis for a post-caroling feast. This night was a really amazing way to celebrate the holiday season.
The St. Francis House held there first Girl’s Night with Mary! The girls walked over to Mary’s house together after St. Francis closed for the day. At the house, the girls made their own personal pizzas, baked and decorated Christmas cookies, watched the movie Elf, played games, and had a dance party! Everyone had a blast and the girl’s can’t wait for the next Girl’s Night!
St. Francis had a halloween party and got spooked! The kids wore their costumes and enjoyed lots of snacks and candy. We played games like pin the stem on the pumpkin and mummy tag! The students really enjoyed wrapping Mary in streamers to create the “mummy.” It was a BOOtiful afternoon!
St. Francis took a trip to Packer Orchards for a fun afternoon at the pumpkin patch! We took a tour through some greenhouses and learned about pumpkins and searched for red strawberries. Then, we were treated to a hayride through the corn fields. We each found our perfect pumpkin and then took turns getting lost in the corn maze! After all of us made it through the maze we played King of the Castle on top of the giant hay tower. Patrick treated us all to some delicious ice cream to finish the afternoon! The next day, the students spent the afternoon carving and painting their pumpkins!
St. Francis House is back open for another school year! What better way to start off the year than with some slime making. The students worked together to create a fun, slimey craft! It was the first time making slime for many of the students and now all we hear is, “when are we going to make slime again?!?”
